No-thought Thursday.  Most parents can probably relate to this song.

I love the style of this song… it’s so southern in so many ways, from the organ, to the southern rock vocals, to the gospel choir… and it has great lyrics to go with it.  It is important to let the truth win out… sometimes it takes a while for it to come but with trust in God, doing the right thing will always make us sleep well at night.

Though it might be painful
You know that time will always tell
Those people have long since gone
My father never failed

September 12: Michael W. Smith – Place In This World (1990)

This song and video takes me back… I was transitioning between middle school and high school as well as moving back to my home state at the time that it came out.  I didn’t know who I was or where I was supposed to be.  It took a long time before I began to find myself again although I’d have to admit I still sometimes feel this way now.

September 11: Voices of Hope – In God We Trust (2001)

Everyone has a story.  This is mine.

I was in the first semester teaching where I teach now.  On Tuesdays I taught classes from 8 to 10 in the morning.  Between classes around 9 I hadn’t heard anything and was oblivious to what was going on.  I taught that class at 9 like it was just any other day.

By the time the class finished, word had begun to trickle around campus and I found out shortly thereafter about what had happened in New York, D.C., and the confusion of the events in Pennsylvania.  I spent the rest of the morning in my office listening to the news, loud enough it could be heard by individuals walking down the hallway, and scouring the internet for any information I could which I would subsequently print out and post on my door.

With all the rumors that circulated–were there targets in Atlanta? did something happen at the University of Georgia?–I remember the great relief when the college finally closed early in the afternoon and I could go home and be with my family.

It’s hard for me to believe it has been 9 years.  In some ways it seems like only days ago while in other ways it seems like an eternity.  I’m not going to try and give any sweeping thoughts about what happened or how we should look back on it… just be grateful for those things in your life that are meaningful to you and do your best to make the world better tomorrow than it is today.

Another one of my favorite lost gems… there’s not a lot of back story to go with it beyond just an affinity for the song which came out during a difficult time of my life.

August 8: Hawk Nelson – Friend Like That (2008)

Tomorrow the kids go back to school which meant my role at church kicked back into gear doing A/V and tech work for children’s Sunday School.  This is one of those songs I’ve been exposed to and I happen to like it a good bit.  Is it a complicated or revolutionary song?  No but it is fun to listen to and encouraging all the same.

August 1: Bob Carlisle – We Fall Down (2000)

This song was an encouragement to me many years ago.  Sometimes when I try to right my ship (metaphorically speaking), I find myself disappointed with not being able to follow through with my grand expectations.  It is helpful to remember that part of walking through life is learning how to live with ourselves when we mess up.

While not being the most trendy or contemporary of songs, I’ve always appreciated the lyrics–in particular the lyrics at the end of the second verse:

Cause if the priest who fell could find the grace of God to be enough, then there must be some hope for the rest of us.

July 25: Anointed – The Call (1995)

At church today a lady I used to work with stopped by after spending a year traveling the world with a Christian mission team.  Instead of it being a true homecoming, it was just a visit giving her the opportunity to visit everyone before going on her next calling – full time mission work in the Philippines.  I have tremendous respect and awe for anyone who can accept such a responsibility.  I know that it only comes along to those who have the ability to handle it but nonetheless it amazes me still.

I had another song in mind for today but I ended up going with this one because it also has a separate memory that is remotely tied in.  I remember one of the first times I heard this song was when I was getting ready to leave my brief experience in teaching high school to go back to graduate school.  I didn’t know what was coming up but it all worked out; you could say that’s part of what faith is all about.
