July 31: Clive Griffin – Commitment of the Heart (1993)

Posted in Rock/Pop/R&B, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2010/07/31

Periodically I’ll drop in a song that has seemingly been completely lost in the past and I suspect I’m one of at most five people who remember it (other than the artist himself).

I think this is a pretty good song but it came out at the wrong time… songs like this weren’t making the radio in 1993.  Even the legend of hitmaker Diane Warren (from a previous week’s theme) wasn’t enough to save the day.  As one web site I visited remarked, Sony spent a small fortune and put forth a large effort to make Griffin the next big thing only to give up three months later.  Grunge, hip-hop, country, and really soft ballads were ruling the day in 1993 (I remember complaining bout how the defining song of my senior year ended up being Achy Breaky Heart, ack!).

With a little tweaking and updating this song could probably come out today and be a small hit.  For now, just enjoy this long track of music history.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

July 30: Dave Days featuring Tay Zonday: I’m Just a Baby (2010)

Every few years the world gets exposed to the next center of young female attention.  Be it the Jonas Brothers, Clay Aiken, n’Sync, the Backstreet Boys, Hanson, New Kids on the Block, Menudo, Danny Partidge, and so on, the mass marketing tools of the music industry sell the next clean cut young face to sing, dance, and move 10 million units of product.

Of course the face of the day right now is Justin Beiber.  I have two young daughters who appear not quite to have caught onto “Beiber Fever” even though some girls their age (particularly the older one) are in “love”.  As such it’s still safe for me to post this rather spot-on parody on Beiber’s biggest hit… knowing in a few years time, the next heartthrob will come along and I’ll just have to grin and bear it while my daughters wax romantic about just how “perfect” he is.

No-thought Thursday.  With my family out of town visiting relatives, the title is apropos even if the lyrics aren’t.

July 28: Dan Seals – Addicted (1990)

I was never Delilah or Casey Kasem but in my brief radio career I did get to do a few requests and dedications.

My wife-then-girlfriend and I were dating when I got my first job in radio at a small country station in west Alabama.  Her and her best friend of the time would sometimes drive over to where they could hear me on the air (as the station’s effective broadcast range was maybe 20 miles).  At the time her best friend was dating a guy that, to be honest, we didn’t know if he was right for her.  The relationship had started off intensely and then gradually cooled to the point where she (along with those of us who were friends with her) wondered if he cared for her as much as she did then.  One evening I dedicated this song to her and wished her the best.

Sometimes though, especially when it comes to love, you don’t really know how it will all play out.  Not long after the night I played this song for her, her and her boyfriend aired things out and fixed many of their issues.  Today they are happily married with four kids and I’m glad it didn’t work out like we thought it might.

July 27: Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band – Against the Wind (1980)

My family (sans me) is headed to visit relatives this week and so this song is for my lovely wife: a mutually appreciated, solid driving song.

A little time alone this week will be good as I get ready for the fall term at work; maybe I’ll get out and do some solo driving in the mountains and let my hidden free-spirited self get some air.

July 26: Kris Kross – Jump (1992)

After mentioning my friend from church who is going on a mission trip yesterday, I wanted to throw a song out to my friend Karen whose parents were missionaries in Asia in the 1970’s.  Karen has insisted I eventually post this song and own up to my (rather embarrassing, if not unusual) experience “dancing” to this song when I was in high school.  I put “dancing” in quote marks because, well, if you ever saw me try to dance – particularly to a hip hop song, I doubt you’d actually call it dancing.

So here we are, awkward high school memories, take two… heh. 🙂

July 25: Anointed – The Call (1995)

At church today a lady I used to work with stopped by after spending a year traveling the world with a Christian mission team.  Instead of it being a true homecoming, it was just a visit giving her the opportunity to visit everyone before going on her next calling – full time mission work in the Philippines.  I have tremendous respect and awe for anyone who can accept such a responsibility.  I know that it only comes along to those who have the ability to handle it but nonetheless it amazes me still.

I had another song in mind for today but I ended up going with this one because it also has a separate memory that is remotely tied in.  I remember one of the first times I heard this song was when I was getting ready to leave my brief experience in teaching high school to go back to graduate school.  I didn’t know what was coming up but it all worked out; you could say that’s part of what faith is all about.

July 24: Train – Drops of Jupiter (2001)

Lately I’ve had several days where I just didn’t seem to have much I knew to say; I guess these are the dog-days of my project where trying to come up with 5 or 6 good posts a week for over 6 months now has really brought me to a bit of a wall.  No pithy comments today… I’ll just put up a song that seems to have a certain ethereal quality to it.

July 23: Deep Blue Something – Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1995)

Here’s to a little bit of desperation and straining for a goal…I can’t really explain why I like this song because, well let’s face it, what’s the point of it?  I imagine the songwriter, desperate to come up with something catchy, thinking “maybe if I throw in a famous old movie and use it as the only common ground between two slightly desperate lovers, well who wouldn’t love that?”  Heh.  Of course, this post opens me up to comments that the post itself shows some desperation and straining… but that would only be fitting, no?
