Harbinger, Sage or Fool

June 30: McBride and the Ride: Can I Count On You (1991)

Posted in Country, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2010/06/30

My wife will be home tomorrow and needless to say I’m excited to have home – even being gone for just ten days or so feels strange at this juncture of our lives.

I remember when we first started going out that this song was in my mind a lot; it was released several years before hand but had always made an impact on me.  I’m happy to say in retrospect that the answer has turned out to be “yes.”

June 29: Collective Soul – The World I Know (1995)

I’ve always had my melancholy streak; rarely have been afraid to embrace a little bit of sadness and introspection–at times maybe too much if I’m totally honest.  I think sometimes I get resentful because it feels like too much of the world doesn’t stop and reflect on things as much as I selfishly want them to.

For people who I think are like me, there’s a need (sometimes too much so) to want to be understood.  Ironically, probably the first thing we have to learn is that we are incapable of really understanding ourselves in the first place.  Yet, it’s the journey toward who we are that allows us to push forward and feel like we can accomplish things.  I think that’s one of the things that appeals to me about this song so much is that recognition of what makes one morose while not giving into it.

June 28: Jimmy Buffett – Come Monday (1974)

I just needed to be able to work this song in at some point.  Referencing recent posts I think dear reader will see where I’m coming from on this.

June 27: Michael W. Smith & Amy Grant – Lord, Have Mercy (2002)

My favorite definition of the world mercy is “the display of unwarranted compassion from one person to another despite a crime or wrongdoing.”

No one can demand mercy for mercy cannot be expected.  Yet I think all of us want mercy when we make mistakes.  As such it becomes imperative upon us then to act in a way we want to be treated so that we may hold out hope to be treated mercifully.

In our relationship with God, we have no bargaining chips and their is no place to hide.  All we have is an appeal for mercy which is answered far more often than we deserve.

June 26: Kevin Rudolf – Let It Rock (without Lil Wayne) (2008)

A mi casa, we’re all getting pumped up for the USA soccer game this afternoon.  Hopefully I won’t regret putting a song up on game day (I’m trying to keep all my memories this will create as positive ones.) 🙂

Still, I needed some music to get psyched up with and this is a great song to get fired up with.  Thankfully I was able to find this version free of the Lil Wayne part which at best is an off-topic distraction and at worse a rather perverse ruination of a good song.  So turn it up and let it rock… I have a feeling it’s gonna be a good day.

June 25: Don Henley – The Boys of Summer (1984)

This is going to be one hot summer.  My kids are not feeling real enthusiastic about leaving the house and I can’t say I really blame them.  I’m reminded of the many summers growing up that I spent with my great-grandmother in Louisiana – she never had air conditioning and wow did it get hot by the end of the afternoon.  I spent many days just finding a shade spot outside, grateful for the breeze, and hoping a passing shower would make it rain long enough to actually cool off as opposed to ramping up the humidity even more.

No-thought Thursday.

June 23: Lonestar – Mr. Mom (2004)

Posted in Country, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2010/06/23

Since I never used this song last year during my extended single parentage experience, I decided this would be a good time to throw it in this year with her gone for the next week.  Great video to go with it; I think I’m a bit more capable than the poor chap in the video but then again I don’t have anyone in diapers anymore either. 🙂

June 22: Bill Withers – Ain’t No Sunshine (1971)

My wife headed out today on a professional trip today; as such it will be me and the kiddos for about a week, sorta like last summer in minature.

I was looking for a good song to send her off on and tell her I’ll miss her.  I absolutely love this song; I can remember in high school this being such a popular song with me and friends because of the famous repeating “I Know”s.

June 21: Richard Marx – Eternity (1997)

I’ve been wanting to post a Richard Marx song for the longest time but couldn’t find the right moment to match a song (or found something else I wanted to use more).  So I decided to go with just posting a slightly off the wall song of his because I like it.

As I understand it, the regular album version of this song was supposed to be Marx’s second single from his album Flesh and Bone but after the lethargic response from mainstream radio for the first single (one of my personal favorites, “Until I Find You Again”), the record label shelved the release of this song… which is a shame because it’s an excellent song.  I particularly like this acoustic version that came from a bonus CD which was bundled with the main CD release.
