February 28: Chris Rice – Smell the Color Nine (2003)

For better or worse I’m most comfortable when I can see data, apply logic, and understand fully why something is done in a particular way.  I think most people can be this way sometimes, I just tend to take it to another level–sometimes for good reasons and sometimes with the selfish desire to avoid believing I might be wrong.

With that said, I’m also aware in life that’s not always possible and in some arenas it is actually counterproductive.  Sometimes you have to take on faith that even when you don’t know all the facts that it’s going to work out the way it is supposed to.  I find this terribly difficult but I’m working on it…

February 27: Village People – YMCA (1978)

Just some fun for the weekend… things have been a bit stressful with work and so I’m throwing it back to some less stressful times.

This goes out to my friends Shannan, Laurie, and Jessica from high school… driving all over our hometown on weekends and having a lot of fun whenever this song came on. “Stop doing the YMCA motions and get your hands back on the wheel!” hehe

Vodpod videos no longer available.

February 26: Toad the Wet Sprocket – Good Intentions (1995)

This song is one of my favorites.   I don’t know that I can put into words why I internalize it so well but I can completely relate to the lyrics.  Maybe it’s because I understand the fear of one’s actions not measuring up to one’s ideals–“the road to hell is paved with good intentions” as the line goes.  I have to focus on the positives and remind myself not to be so critical of both myself and others…

February 25: Emerson Hart – If You’re Gonna Leave (2007)

No-thought Thursday.  This song doesn’t have any personal significance; I just feel the emotional intensity of it resonates with me.  I can put myself in the shoes of someone who feels like this (and I’m thankful I’m not in them).

February 24: Diamond Rio – I Believe (2003)

In the past few days I’ve been thinking about my grandmothers and one of my great-grandmothers quite a bit.  I wasn’t fortunate enough to know either of my grandfathers, as they both passed away before I was born, but I was incredibly fortunate to have had many years with both my paternal and maternal grandmothers (who were around long enough each to see at least one of my children) and my great-grandmother from my mother’s mother’s side.  There are stories lingering with all three of them that I should share in time… but I have over 10 months left so I don’t think there’s a rush to get them out now.  I just wanted to play a song to think of them.

February 23: Chris Walker – Take Time (1992)

I felt like digging out a bit of an obscure track for today’s song.  (Whereas many people probably have forgotten about yesterday’s Martin Page song, it can at least claim to have been a fairly big hit at it’s time; alas the same really can’t be said for this song.)

While this song is mainly focused on romantic love, I think there’s something to be said for the sentiment it expresses about showing and not merely saying how you feel regardless of the nature of the relationship.   I’m not always good at following through with how I think or what I say–it’s the actions that are hard for me.  I’m blessed to have special people who care about me and yet I tend to get distracted and worked-up over the ones that don’t matter as much; I need to show the ones that deserve my love and respect that I actually feel that way.

On a side note, you gotta love a guy who can rock out the double bass in a pop music video…

February 22: Martin Page – In the House of Stone and Light (1995)

Getting a new week off, this is a flashback to the past with a song that I really liked at the time it came out.  The synonymous CD this track comes from has several real gems; I remember listening to it repeatedly.  Not much else to say as it is a Monday… a rainy one and gonna be a long one. 🙂

February 21: Phillips, Craig, and Dean – Mercy Came Running (1995)

The world is still coming to grips with Tiger Woods’ infidelities and addictions.  I’m not going to pass judgment one way or another on the man, whether his apology was appropriate and if he deserves my forgiveness or anyone else’s… all I know is that his situation reminds me of a friend from my past who may understand the situation better than most.

I used to live in Hattiesburg, Mississippi which has become famous for housing the addiction recovery clinic that Tiger Woods has supposedly been attending.  When I lived there about ten years ago, one of my good friends at church was a big fan of Tiger Woods.  Out of respect because it has been many years since I’ve spoken to him, I’ll simply refer to my him as R.  R would be the first to say that him and his wife engaged in some very risky and self-destructive behavior.  It took coming to his lowest point to realize he needed to make a change; with all his potential, if he didn’t have the right kind of guidance in his life, he was going to throw it all away.  R found his faith, and while not perfect, became the kind of person I believe who was worthy of great respect.

I’ve wondered in the past few months what R would make of the whole situation; earnestly I don’t have a clue what he must think.  I remember him remarking the importance this song (and another song “Crucified With Christ” by the same artists) had on him.

So I’m headed off out-of-state for my son’s season opening soccer tournament.   It is a rite of passage that I’ve never minded each February – the often bitterly cold weather requiring significant travel to watch a group of boys kick a ball.

As this is one of his favorite “get pumped up” songs, I’ll send it out to him with the hope for a successful season between now and the end of May

February 19: The Hours – Ali In the Jungle (2006)

A recent set of advertisements during the winter Olympics reminded me of this song; my original familiarity with it comes from having playing a soccer video game with my son.  This song was used as a background piece while you were within the menu options and it’s very distinct style made it stand out (in a good way).
