The song says it all. 😀

1 more day… Stay Beautiful – The Last Goodnight (2008)

Posted in Rock/Pop/R&B, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2009/07/24

The end is near.  Today is the last day for summer camps for the girls… my son’s soccer camp ended yesterday afternoon.  It’s time to sit and wait…

Okay maybe not, we’ve got things to do around the house before mom comes home.  Nevertheless, we’ve survived the summer as a single parent household.  As when I started this song blog six weeks ago, I have always respected those parents who take care of their children without another adult to shoulder the load.  Now I can relate a little better… the constant exhaustion and lack of me-time wears on your faster than I guess I would’ve expected. I won’t lie – I’m looking forward to my wife being back just so one day next week I can be completely useless. 🙂  Hopefully she won’t mind too much…

2 more days… Lift Me Up – Howard Jones (1992)

Posted in Rock/Pop/R&B, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2009/07/23

Howard Jones could almost be described as a one hit at a time wonder.   Most people wouldn’t recognize him or his entire catalog of music and yet he managed a number of significant hits in the 1980’s (Things Can Only Get Better, No One Is To Blame, Everlasting Love).  Sadly when this song came out in 1992, it didn’t really fit the music of the time – which is a shame because this is such an excellent song.

As with the aforementioned songs, this song has a generally positive spirit.  As my time at home without my significant other comes to a close, this song finishes with an appropriate set of lines:

And when you can see, the changes I’ve made in me…

Well I’m waiting for, you know I’m waiting for your love.

3 more days… Carry Your Heart – Blue Dogs (1999)

It’s funny how some songs find you.  About four or five years ago I was flipping around on satellite radio and stopped for a moment on an alternative country station.  Almost immediately this song came on and I liked it from the moment I heard it.

Love can be that way.  My wife and I fell in love sorta the same way.  We’ve been happily married for over fourteen years now.  I’m more than ready for her to be home.

4 more days… If You’re Gone – Matchbox Twenty (2002)

Posted in Rock/Pop/R&B, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2009/07/21

I probably should have done this song much earlier but I couldn’t find a day when I really wanted it before.  That might make it sound like I am only so-so on this song; quite the contrary, this is one of my favorite songs.  I enjoy so much about this song, capped off by the awesome horn arrangement toward the end.

5 more days… Since You’ve Been Gone – The Outfield (1987)

5 more days.  I think I can make it.  It’s been an interesting summer.  Strangely, my mind drifts to Rocky IV (see No Easy Way Out from several weeks ago) when Drago says to Rocky “to the end” as they break gloves in the last round of the fight.  Not sure why that visual metaphor arrived… wow. 🙂

6 more days… Never Been Unloved – Michael W. Smith (1998)

I know my flaws… well I think I know most of them.  One of them is arrogance… insert joke about irony?

Seriously though, I know one of my biggest weaknesses is my tendency to be critical.  Critical of others and critical of myself.  As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I like order.  I have a bit of a perfectionist streak that is muddled by my lazy, procrastinating tendencies.

I won’t change my mind about wanting and aiming for the best.  But I need to be reminded that being imperfect is part of being human.  I don’t live up to my own high standards and it’s unfair to hold others as well.  Forgiveness has been given to me countless times… I need to be willing to accept it and be willing to give it more generously.  In spite of all my faults I’m thankful that I have always been loved.

7 more days… It’s a Great Day to Be Alive – Travis Tritt (2000)

Posted in Country, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2009/07/18

Whenever I need a pick-me-up, this is one of the first songs I turn to.  Whenever I’m feeling good, this is a song I love to play as I’m driving.  As I get older, I’m learning to appreciate each day more.

I couldn’t find a good video for this song but thankfully I found this audio player.

I just like this song – it’s something different and as the days count down it feels right.

9 more days… I Wish It Would Rain Down – Phil Collins (1989)

Posted in Rock/Pop/R&B, Songs I Like by harbinger75 on 2009/07/16

At some point this song had to be used. I absolutely love this song… ever since it came out 20 years ago, it is one of those songs I could listen to again and again. Eric Clapton’s guitar leaves me breathless and Phil Collins’ vocal flourishes can make me curl my toes.

On top of that, it has one of the greatest videos (IMHO) in all of pop music history. The entire set of videos from the …But Seriously album are fantastic (Do You Remember, Something Happened on the Way to Heaven, Hang In Long Enough, Another Day In Paradise, and this one). I’ve shied away from using actual music videos when I can because at best they fade into the background and at worst detract from the song; I’m making a special exception here because if you’ve never seen the video (or haven’t seen it in a long time), it is one you should see.
